What is Cambridge DELTA Module 3?
In Cambridge DELTA Module 3, you choose one track: Extending Practice and ELT Specialism, or English Language Teaching Management. You research, write and submit an assignment, either a design for a course programme or a management change proposal.

What you'll learn
In Module 3, Option 1: Extending Practice and ELT Specialism, you'll learn how to:
- identify key issues within a specific area of teaching,
- conduct a needs analysis,
- set up diagnostic testing,
- analyse results and use them to create appropriate course objectives,
- put together a course plan,
- assess whether learners have met course objectives,
- evaluate courses.
Choosing your specialism
You will get guidance in the first two sessions to help you narrow down your assignment to the best specialism for you. This might be teaching exam classes or teaching monolingual learners, for example. There are 16 specialisms to choose from.
Access to students
You only need access to students while you are doing Part 2 of the course. If you have kept up with the course schedule, that is late October to early December on a September to May course, and late April to early June on a March to November course.
Books
We provide some reading material, but you will need to buy some books. The main ones we recommend are Curriculum Development in Language Teaching (2nd edition) by Jack C. Richards and Testing for Language Teachers (3rd edition) by Arthur Hughes and Jake Hughes, plus two or three books specific to your specialism.
Beyond the assignment
We'll also teach you how to approach academic reading and academic writing, and improve your word processing and data processing skills.

How long does it take to complete Module 3?
Take Your Time DELTA Module 3 courses take nine months to complete. Courses run for 36 weeks from March to November or from September to May and include 20 ninety-minute input sessions plus suggested reading and suggested writing each week. When there is no input session, you will be invited to join co-working sessions and to work with peers as part of accountability groups to help you maintain momentum and make good progress with your assignment.
We recommend taking our Module 1 and Module 3 courses consecutively, i.e. one module per academic year.
How do I decide which Module 3 specialism to choose?
At Take Your Time DELTA, we offer both Module 3 tracks:
- Option 1: Extending Practice and ELT Specialism
- Option 2: English Language Teaching Management
You will get guidance in the first two sessions of your Module 3 course to help you narrow down your assignment to the best specialism for you. For example, in Option 1, this might be teaching exam classes or teaching monolingual learners. There are 16 specialisms to choose from. In Option 2, this might be academic management, customer service, marketing or human resources, the 4 specialisms available.

How many hours a week will I need to dedicate to Module 3?
The exact number of weekly hours is difficult to estimate as it differs for everybody depending on their prior knowledge, their experience, their reading speed, how easy they find it to use computers, etc.
Typically we find that people who spend five to ten hours a week on the module outside the sessions are best able to keep up with the deadlines, though they may need to do more than this the closer they get to the deadline.
That's why our Take Your Time DELTA Module 3 courses are set up to include more frequent live sessions near the beginning of the course and fewer later on. This gives you time for the extra research and writing that you are likely to want to do as the course progresses. We also have optional co-working sessions in weeks with no input session to help you maintain momentum throughout the course.
I won't have access to students throughout Module 3. Is that important?
You only need access to students while you are doing Part 2 of the Module 3 ELT Specialism course. If you have been able to keep up with the course schedule, typical dates will be:
- March to November courses: access to students required late April to early June.
- September to May courses: access to students required late October to early December.
What happens if I miss a writing deadline?
Take Your Time DELTA offers a degree of flexibility if you can't meet writing deadlines.
However, we have found that if participants miss a deadline by more than two weeks, they tend to fall behind on the course.
Participants who miss two consecutive deadlines tend not to complete the course or submit the Module 3 assignment.
There is the option to move to a later cohort if you fall behind, but this is subject to a fee as laid out in the Terms and Conditions.
How do I submit my DELTA Module 3 assignment?
You need to arrange and pay for the assignment submission with a recognised Cambridge centre. The centre you choose can be anywhere in the world as you will submit your assignment by email. Visit the Cambridge English website to find a full list of centres. We can also offer advice to help you find a centre.
